I’m John Naughton and I’m Professor of the Public Understanding of Technology at the Open University. I’m a member of the Systems Group and Director of the Faculty of Technology’s Relevant Knowledge programme.
This is a Blog that I use for stuff that’s relevant to my university work. Think of it as a kind of personal notebook. Don’t expect it to be profound or well-organised.
My general blog is Memex. It’s named after Vannevar Bush’s original concept of a system for associative linking which eventually was realised as hypertext and later as the World Wide Web. The story in told in some detail in my book, A Brief History of the Future: the origins of the Internet.

I’m a keen photographer (the header image is a panoramic shot of the Mill Pond, Grantchester, taken on January 1, 2007).

Oh — about the Blog title: ‘oscal’ is the Irish verb ‘to open’.
